Piston Foundation at the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival 40

Lime Rock Park held its annual Historic Festival over the Labor Day weekend last month, featuring several days of jam-packed racing events and excitement. Frequent visitors to Lime Rock Park will have noticed a new presence at turn one starting with the Historic Festival 40. The Park generously donated a billboard space to the Piston Foundation right on Big Bend. Our presence at the park helps us share our mission with Lime Rock race fans and embodies our role as a car community charity.

Pistons in the Paddock

If you wanted to find the Foundation at the Historic Festival all you had to do was stroll down to Paddock A. Our paddock hosts, Vintage Racing Services, generously gave us space for our tent and the boys from Driving La Carrera parked their Piston-liveried Volvo rally car right in front.

While the paddock is the loudest place to be, it’s also the best place for conversations about the future of our collector car community. Drivers, shop owners, and working technicians all stopped by to learn more about the Foundation and how they can help.

Founders on the Track

Amongst our Founders Club members are numerous vintage racers and several were on track during the Historic Festival showing their Piston pride with our logo on their cars. Tom Brown took a class win in his Triumph Spitfire, while Mayo Smith survived a qualifying crash in his 911 to take first place in his class. David Porter fought gremlins in his Ford Escort but ran well in his classic Ford Cortina. Tony Wang drew a crowd on and off track in his beautiful Maserati birdcage.

The Piston Technician Award

The very first Piston Technician Award was presented to the weekend’s most valuable race technician in a pit lane ceremony at the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival 40. The Piston Technician Award recognizes the essential contribution auto technicians make to the collector car community through their trade skills and technical automotive expertise.

Mike Marra of Automobile Associates in Canton, CT, received the award for his excellent race prep and maintenance of car #310, the ’72 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Dave Hutchings. After presenting the award, Dicky Riegel, President and CEO of Lime Rock Park, expressed his appreciation for the contributions of auto technicians and reiterated the Park’s commitment to skilled trade education in the collector car industry. A Community Partner

The Piston Foundation is proud to be a community partner of Lime Rock Park. It’s weekends like the Historic Festival that show just how vital our work together is. Dicky Riegel, President and CEO of Lime Rock Park, said, “Lime Rock Park is delighted to support the Piston Foundation’s mission to fund skilled trade education and apprenticeships. It’s critical if we are going to continue to enjoy the Historic Festival for generations to come.”

Stop by the Piston Foundation tent at the next Historic Festival to cast a vote for the Technician award, get a sticker for your race car, and make a donation to fund the future of skilled trade education in the collector car community. If you can’t wait until then, visit our website to make a donation or volunteer your time.
